In 1992, Somalian refugee Dahabo fled her home and arrived in Ifo camp in Dadaab, Kenya - where she has lived ever since in a mud hut. When I handed her a bed net, she said to me with such joy, “Now I have something to protect me, and I will use it nicely and I will use it well.” The 56-year-old mother has four married daughters who also live in the camp. Dahabo has been to the hospital several times over the years to be treated for malaria.
This rainy season, because of your support, she will have extra protection against this deadly disease. In the few minutes I spent with Dahabo, I was deeply touched by her gratitude, and even more so by the simplicity and optimism with which she spoke. She had spent 16 years in a UNHCR refugee camp, but she hadn’t lost her spirit and now she had the comfort and protection of a bed net.
In a place where personal possessions are few, and sleeping safely and peacefully through the night is a luxury, I was privileged to be able to hand a net to a family to call their own. A simple blue bed net to call their own is also a life saved from the ravages of malaria.
There are thousands of others like Dahabo in refugee camps in Africa. For just $10, you can help protect a refugee with a bed net and give them a better life. Send a net for World Malaria Day.
